Frequently asked questions

How many children have you operated on since your inception?2023-06-23T16:26:17-04:00

We have brought in more than 100 children to NE Ohio for heart surgeries. Through our focus on outbound surgical teams teaching training and equipping local medical teams within the developing countries we estimate over 4000 children by Gift of Life North East Ohio. More than 46,000 have been served by all the 84 Gift of Life Programs around the world.

Have you been able to secure Rotary International Grants?2023-06-23T16:19:30-04:00

Yes. Gift of Life International and our affiliated charters are second only to Polio in securing matching funds from The Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation is rated four stars, the top rating offered by Charity Navigator.

How are you funded?2023-06-23T16:20:09-04:00

All Rotary clubs are encouraged to become involved in international projects as part of the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self”. We raise funds from various Rotary Clubs around North East Ohio as well as numerous corporate and individuals, many of whom have experienced congenital heart disease within their own family. Almost every project we take on we have partners and seek Rotary International matching grants to support our missions. We try to leverage each dollar 4 to 1 through partners and grants. Each grant may have 10 or 12 partners including Rotary Clubs from developed and developing world, other Gift of Life Chapters and individuals. Donations range from a few hundred dollars to $15,000. We have been fortunate to have established a Legacy Account that allows us to act quickly to commit to a need even before we have solidified all our funding sources.

How much of each dollar donated goes to serving children with congenital heart disease?2023-06-23T16:20:48-04:00

+/-98%. We are totally run by volunteers including our accounting and tax filing responsibilities. A very small amount of our funds goes towards limited marketing materials. Though GoL International has a few paid staff members, Gift of Life North East Ohio is all volunteer.

What countries do the children come from?2023-06-23T16:18:37-04:00

Gift of Life International and the 84 Gift of Life Programs have served children in over 80 countries in the developing world. Our Gift of Life Northeast Ohio has been directly involved in more than 20 countries but our countries of focus have been Egypt, Haiti and Kenya.

How can I refer a child?2023-06-23T16:18:18-04:00

Contact us directly by email or Phone. If we can’t help by ourselves, we will connect a child from the developing world to the appropriate resource quickly. We recently received an email from a Cleveland resident of Polish heritage asking about their family back in Poland housing a refugee family from Ukraine. The Ukrainian child needed heart surgery but could not go back to the war in Ukraine. We connected them to Gift of Life Poland and secured the surgery through our GOL International. The arrangements were accomplished in a few weeks.

Are you a Rotary International program?2023-06-23T16:18:00-04:00

No. We are not an endorsed Rotary program. We were started by individuals who are Rotarians and have aligned ourselves world wide with Rotary as it provides an immediate network of support with a global structure that allows us to act quickly to save a life.
